The reconstruction underway at 830 Eastern Parkway is sure a curious sight. Workers appear to be adding a fourth level to this ornate three-story brownstone between Kingston and Albany Avenues. Every other home on this block of early 1900's houses is three stories high. Looking closer, steel floor beams cut across the existing window frames. Obviously, the brownstone front will be demolished and the resulting structure will sport a new look. What's going on here?

why do you think the brownstone front will be demolished? I would wager that it won't. That would be both unnecessary and expensive and it would be difficult to put something up that would be nicer.
People add levels to existing buildings all the time and don't change the facade.
That's a pretty nice facade, although it's kind of worn-iut looking. I hope they fix it up, not tear it down.
most ch renos work well but sometimes they do basterdise the property ....

Hey Ben, I'm not an architect or contractor, but I wonder how the front will remain since the floors now appear to lie across the midpoint of the windows. Can you explain how this will work?

I didn't notice the floor joists cutting across the windows, you could be right but this seems really odd. Hard to know what's in store without seeing plans.
If they are changing the levels of the floors the building must really be shot. If that's the case then this is basically a teardown and new construction project rather than a renovation. It'll be a shame if that's the case.
